Can Black African soap help with psoriasis?

Natural products and therapies

Black African soap is originally produced in Ghana from a lot of different natural ingredients and is shown to contain a variety of oils, vitamins and minerals. It has not been shown to help with psoriasis specifically, but if it has moisturizing properties, it can probably be used safely by people with psoriasis. However, caution is mandatory when using a new product and it should be tested on a small section of skin, to make sure that there is no adverse effect.

Dr. Marc Bourcier:

Black African soap is created from a collection of tree barks and plants. It contains products that have anti-inflammatory properties, like vitamin A and vitamin E. There might be a certain positive effect from ingesting vitamins A or E, but when it is used topically, the skin will not absorb significant enough amounts to generate interesting outcomes, because their concentration is too weak.

However, if this soap helps to moisten and soften the skin, it can probably be used safely. In the best case scenario, it will not do much, but it might help to generate a little comfort. It is not part of the officially recommended treatments or skin cares.

Although not part of the standard medical treatment for psoriasis, Black African soap is advertised as a natural remedy that can help alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis. Ghanaians have used African Black Soap for centuries and claim that it is useful in the treatment of acne, oily skin, blemishes, and helps soothe skin irritations and conditions such as eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis. Black African soap contains various oils, including palm oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, shea butter and palm kernel oil and ashes from various plants, such as shea tree bark, cocoa pods, banana trees and plantain leaves. Manufacturers claim that Black African soap is a 100% all natural soap and contains no scents, preservatives, or chemicals.

Similar to other over the counter products, containing oils, Black African soap may have the potential to reduce psoriasis scale and sooth itching. It is always important to check ingredients for potential sensitivities or allergens. As with any new product, if you choose to use this soap test it on a small area of skin to be sure it doesn’t aggravate your skin. Not everyone responds in the same way to these products.
